Hawa Student Award ceremony 2017
Winners of the Hawa Student Award 2017 received their prizes in Zurich on 9 March. The ten best submissions will remain on show at ETH Zurich until 21 March.
9 March was a happy day at ETH Zurich. The winners of the Hawa Student Award 2017 received their prizes from jury president Marianne Burkhalter and Hawa CEO Heinz Haab at a festive event. Around 90 people witnessed the laudations, the award ceremony and the opening of an exhibition with the ten best submissions.
The winner of the competition with prizes totalling 12,000 francs was Julia Modlinska, a student at Berlin University of the Arts, who received a prize of 5,000 francs. Equal second place was deservedly shared by Maren Kröller and Raphaela Buchberger of the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart together with Christina Cernovsky and Franziska Faber of Leibniz University, Hannover. Each pair received 3,500 francs.
Emergency housing and urban renewal
The budding architects competing for the award had a difficult assignment: under the motto “More than a roof over my head”, they had to plan a fictitious project to provide emergency housing for 180 to 200 people. One particular challenge was the construction site, at the end of a never completed motorway bridge directly above the river Sihl in the city of Zurich. That meant the participants not only needed to design a housing project shaped to the needs of its future residents, but also effect a piece of urban renewal.
Dialogue with the future generation of planners
This year marked the fourth occasion of the award. Hawa sees the talent competition as an important element of dialogue with the future generation of planners.
Submissions are on exhibition at ETH Hönggerberg (building HIL E) until 21 March. After that, the exhibition can be viewed at Leibniz University of Hannover (9 – 24 May 2017) and later at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart (14 – 16 July 2017).
