Additional new building
for residential care home

Extension with sensitivity and functionality
The Maria Veen residential care home is being given a modern architectural identity by means of the planning by Hartig, Meyer and Wömper Architekten, without affecting the existing structure. The total of four extensions, which are being implemented successively, will create a contemporary ensemble that takes the changing needs for the care and nursing of the residents into consideration. The first completed phase of construction includes the new main entrance, a central kitchen with a dining room and a special highlight: the “Room of Silence”.

Spiritual room full of lightness
The circular “Room of Silence” is the heart of the first phase of construction. Flooded with light and with a well-organized, minimalist design, the room emanates quietness and security. The multi-functional nature of the room transforms it into a place for reflection, meditation, prayer or even communal singing sessions. Funeral ceremonies can also take place here in a dignified setting. If required, the room can be opened up to the adjoining dining room through large, arched sliding doors to provide room for bigger events.

Harmony of aesthetics and technology
The technical implementation of the sliding doors is particularly impressive. The made-to-measure doors follow the radius of the brickwork perfectly, and disappear in wall pockets when they are opened – a detail which is not only visually impressive, but also has some practical advantages. The large passage width of 3.50 metres makes it possible for the rooms to be seamlessly interconnected. This precision work was carried out by the Brandmann joinery, whereas the smooth operation is guaranteed by the Hawa Media 70 sliding door hardware. The individually curved running track was fitted into the lintel of the door, and is surrounded by a 2-piece block frame, which is adjustable at the front. It’s a prime example of a solution that is both aesthetic and functional.
